William Cole wrote in 1657 that walnuts "have the perfect Signature of the Head... The outer husk or green covering represent the outward skin of the skull, the inner woody shell has the signature of the skull and the yellow skin or peel, that covers the kernel of the head. Meningea and Piamater are the thin scarves that envelop the brain. The kernel has the very figure of the brain and it is very beneficial for the brain and resists poisons."
During the Civil War Black Walnut was used as a fast acting remedy for diarrhea and dysentery. Its value was discovered because of the excessive amounts of tannic acid which causes the highly astringent taste, a strong decoction as a cooled external application has been used for over a century to heal sores, ulcers and assorted skin problems. It is a good gargle for a sore throat, cankers and irritations of the mouth. (The Complete Herbal, by Ben Charles Harris.)
The Walnut tree bears the name regia, meaning royal, both because of its attractive appearance and its historical importance as a source of timber and food. Pliny believed it entered Europe from Persia. It was first described as the use of the shells for dyeing white hair brown. He suggested that the green husks be boiled with lead, ashes, oil and earthworms, and the mixture applied to the head!
Dr. Christopher had great success using Walnut Husks for skin problems.
One case was a man suffering from a horrible case of impetigo on his head. He had three-quarters of an inch of scab over the entire hair area; the hair had been clipped as close to the scalp as possible and the scab covered the entire hair area. This man was a soldier and the Army wanted to release him on a medical discharge. He didn't want a medical discharge. He said, I came into the Army a clean man and you left me with this dirty stuff to take back to my family. I don't want to go.
"Dr. John Christopher told him he could be healed. The Army doctors were skeptical, but told Dr. Christopher to go ahead and try. He was in Washington at the time and had to call Salt Lake City to a friend and had him send a sack full of walnut husks to him in Fort Lewis, Washington.
Dr. Christopher made a tincture from the walnut husks in two days. The usual time to make a tincture is fourteen days but he was under a lot of pressure, so it had to be ready in two days. He said, "I credit the Lord for giving the tincture its potency. He spent four days with the fomentation on his head. It was made of layer after layer of gauze till it was very thick, it was covered with adhesive tape and we taped it to hold it down. At the crosses where the tape didn't cover, there was room to insert a syringe with the tincture into the gauze to keep it wet."
"When Monday morning came and for the first time all the dispensary heads were on time, sitting on the edges of their chairs, waiting for the show." Dr. Christopher loosened the adhesive cape where it was holding the headpiece down and took it off. Inside the bandage was three-quarters of an inch of horrible looking scar tissue and scab. But his head was clean as a baby's. There was no sign of impetigo at all. There had been some secondary infection where the scalp had bled and that was healing. The men had all gasped when I took the bandages off. One Army doctor said, "I have been a dermatologist for years and I have never seen a case as horrible as this and never have I seen anything heal as rapidly as what you've used." After that Major Shumate, the dermatologist, told Dr. Christopher to treat all patients brought in to him with herbs. He officially made Him an herbal doctor in the United States Army. (Dr. Christopher's Natural Healing Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 7).
