Blue Vervain has not received much scientific attention though it has been used for hundreds of years by people in many countries. One medical study found that Blue Vervain had noticeable anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Those properties are extremely useful to curb infectious swellings and pain.
It has been stated that Blue Vervain is valued by many herbalists as an agent to rectify poor circulation problems. But amount its many uses, this is perhaps its most obscure, a practice cherished by those who use it, but ignored by others.
Since the days of Samuel Thomson, herbalists have used lobelia with cayenne to treat almost every disease you can think of. This is be cause the pair work on the blood, nerves and lymph which reach every cell of the body, causing a relaxed but alert state through the whole system.
It appears that vervain has the relaxant effect of lobelia, coupled with a mild stimulating effect like cayenne. Dr. Mowrey notes that it affects the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the branch or the nervous system that calms the body down and relaxes the whole system. He also indicates it improves circulation. Other writers have noted that is aids lymphatic flow.. This would help to reduce inflammation, which is at the root of all disease.
Blue vervain, like lobelia and cayenne is a catalyst for the healing process throughout the whole body however, it also appears to be mild in action and hence would work better as a synergist with other herbs which work more directly on the systems which need help.
Blue Vervain is broadly active medicinally, serving as a sedative, diaphoretic, diuretic, bitter tonic and an antispasmodic. It is one of the best palliatives for the onset of a virus cold, particularly with upper respiratory inflammation. It will promote sweating, relax and soothe, allay feverishness, settle the stomach, overall producing a feeling of relaxed well-being. It is especially useful for children who become fidgety and cranky when first feeling ill, running around in a droopy hyperactive fashion or for the child who has spent three hours in bed and is bored to tears but by no means well enough to play in the snow
The idea that vervain is a general relaxant and a stimulant to healing is further confirmed by the following quotation from Joseph E. Meyers as cited by Dr. Shook, "Vervain is tonic, expectorant, sudorific and antispasmodic. It is serviceable in missed menstruation, is an antidote for poke poisoning, expels worms, and is a capital agent for all diseases of the spleen and liver. If given in a warm infusion or powder in intermittent fever, it never fails as a cure. In all cases of cold, and obstinate menstruation, it is a most complete and advantageous sudorific. When the circulation of the blood is weak and languid, it will increase it, and restore it to its proper operation. The infusion, taken cold, forms a good tonic for constitutional debility and during convalescence from acute diseases. It has been found to be of great benefit in scrofula, visceral obstructions, stones and gravel. It will correct diseases of the stomach, help coughs, wheezing, shortness of breath, and so forth. But its virtues are even more wonderful in the effect they produce upon epilepsy or fits. A more remarkable plant is not found within the whole range of the herbal pharmacopoeia.
