Burdock is an effective blood cleanser and detoxifier. Traditionally, it has been used for skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, boils, and rashes. It has also been used for arthritis, (including advanced arthritis), gout, and rheumatism.
Burdock has a cleansing action on the liver and gallbladder, promoting normal and healthy functioning of these vital organs. It stimulates the immune system and is one key ingredient in the Essiac formula.
Essiac tea (which contains burdock) has been used with great success for cancer of all kinds. But burdock stands on its own merits as an anti-cancer medicine, being used as far back as the 12th century to treat tumors. Russia, China, North America, India, and Europe have all benefited from this plant's anti-tumor action.
Burdock has since been researched and found to also contain anti-mutation properties. This is promising in the treatment and prevention of cancer as it has been noted that the cell must first mutate before it actually becomes cancerous.
The root of this plant is said to be particularly good in removing heavy metals.
Burdock stimulates and strengthens the kidneys, allowing them to remove harmful acids from the blood and calcification deposits from the joints. When the kidneys are strong, the liver functions better, as the kidneys can eliminate those toxins which are being eliminated by the liver with ease.
Burdock acts as a diuretic and is healing to the urinary system. It increases the flow of urine, wards off kidney and bladder infections, and relieves bladder pain.
The seed has been used to dissolve kidney stones which are then expelled via the urine. The seeds are also used to remove toxins during fever and during infection such as measles or mumps. If the seeds are not available, the root is also effective.
The fresh root is a natural antibiotic, particularly against staphylococcus. It is anti-fungal as well as anti-bacterial.
Burdock helps to lower blood sugar levels and can be used for hypoglycemia.
And for you women out there suffering from PMS and menopausal symptoms, you may be surprised at how well you feel after you've done your "spring cleanse" using burdock. Not only does it activate a sluggish liver, it also nourishes and assists the pituitary gland to release proteins that balance out the hormones in the body.
Burdock root is high in vitamin C and iron. It contains vitamin B-complex, vitamin E, Paba, zinc, vitamin A, sulphur, manganese, tannins, essential oils, biotin, copper, inulin, 12% protein, and 70% carbohydrate.
As with most other herbs, there are several different ways to take burdock. It is used as a wash for poison ivy and poison oak, acne, wounds, burns, chicken pox, and virtually all skin conditions. Put 2 tsp. shredded root or powder in 2 cups water, simmer for 10 minutes
and let stand for 30 minutes. Soak a linen cloth in the liquid and apply to affected area.
Burdock can be taken alone, herbalists will usually combine it with other herbs so as to tame the rapid removal of toxins which sometimes cause discomfort.
