Blood Flow Booster
Ginkgo & Hawthorn Combination is a cardiovascular tonic for the heart and brain. Both of the herbs it contains are popular in Europe for circulatory disorders. The formula may have beneficial effects in cases of poor circulation, atherosclerosis, headaches, tinnitus, Alzheimer's disease, aging and diabetes.
Ginkgo tree is an ancient tree, sometimes dubbed a living fossil. Ginkgo's resistance to atmospheric and water pollution, as well as to insects and disease, allows a tree to reach ages of up to one thousand years, growing to heights of over one hundred feet. The very shape of the leaves, with their many fan segments, was thought to represent the human circulatory system by many early herbalists, who accordingly employed the leaves in the treatment of circulatory diseases. Extensive clinical research conducted over the last twenty years has validated these beliefs.
These studies have centered around an extract of the leaf called Gbx, which contains a mixture of flavonoid glucosides and terpene derivatives. Gbx has been shown to have a profound effect on the cardiovascular system, opening blood vessels to improve peripheral blood flow throughout the body. Ginkgo also inhibits platelet aggregation (reducing incidence of blood clots in the arteries and veins), inhibits the formation and destructive processes of free radicals in the blood, and promotes oxygenation of senile muscular degeneration. By improving blood flow to the brain, ginkgo helps to prevent cerebral edema. The leaves also assist the functions of the nervous system, acting as an antispasmodic and a sedative. Ginkgo extracts are helpful in treating senility and loss of memory due to poor cerebral circulation. It has also proven effective in reducing ringing in the ears.
Hawthorn began to be recognized for its effectiveness in treating weaknesses of the heart during the sixteenth century, and by the late eighteenth century the herb began to be prescribed for a variety of heart and circulatory ailments. Today hawthorn is widely regarded as the world's best herbal cardiotonic. Its active components are generally thought to be flavonoids (quercetin and quercitin), bio-active pigments found in almost all higher plants. Flavonoids act slowly and gently on circulatory problems by dilating both peripheral blood vessels and coronary vessels, and increasing metabolism in the heart muscles. By improving coronary blood supply, use of hawthorn tends to normalize both low and high blood pressure, and can also lead to a lessening of anginal attacks. Its berries produce softening and dissolving qualities, which assist in the assimilation of other nutrients. The plant has also been found to decrease free fatty acid and lactate buildup, while increasing triglyceride concentrations, suggesting an anabolic (or building up) effect on metabolism. The implication is that under many kinds of stress and even with less oxygen intake-the heart has a greater capacity for work than normal.
Olive Leaf Extract has been proven in numerous tudies to provide blood pressure-lowering properties and inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which helps to prevent the formation of plaque that can clog arteries and cause heart disease. Clinical trials have confirmed that olive leaf extract lowers blood pressure, normalizes heart beat irregularities (arrhythmias), relieves angina pain, and enhances circulatory system function, improving blood flow in cardiovascular and peripheral vascular disorders
Usage: Both ginkgo and hawthorn have gentle actions and are considered to be among the safest of all herbal medicinals. Because their effects are gradual, best results will be realized through extended, moderate use. Use one or two capsules three times a day.
