A Lesson in Immunity
When the kids are at school, day care or other activities, you may worry about them "catching" diseases from other children. "Germs" are not the real problem. Just being exposed to a "germ" does not mean you are going to get sick. There has to be a suitable host environment for the microbes to gain a foothold in the body.
A healthy body is naturally resistant to bacteria and viruses. Boost your children's immune system by feeding them healthy food, "inoculating" them with hugs and words of praise (which is scientifically documented to raise the immune response) and by giving them herbs and supplements that boost the immune response. Ultimate Echinacea or Elderberry Immune are formulas for keeping children's (and adult's) immune systems working in high gear when colds or flu or other nasty "bugs" are going around.
Maintaining a healthy nervous system will help as well. Children, like adults, are more prone to get sick when they are stressed. Stress-J liquid, B complex, Vitamin C and Liquid Calcium or chewable Calcium Plus D3 can strengthen the nerves and adrenal glands to maintain a strong immune system.
Adults are more willing to experiment with using natural remedies on themselves than they are on a child. They take their children to the doctor because they don't want to risk their children's health. While serious health problems warrant medical advice and intervention, most common health problems are easily treated without the risks imposed by drug medications.
Typically, if the problem isn't serious or persistent, there is nothing wrong with applying some simple home remedies using a dash of common sense and a lot of tender, loving care. If problems are serious or persistent, then medical attention should be sought, but often a child can be well in the time in takes for a parent to get an appointment with the doctor.
Take some responsibility for your children's (or grandchildren's) health. Following are some common health problems experienced by children and some specific natural remedies that can be used to help them. Trust your parental instincts and learn to use home remedies as a type of primary health care, with medical doctors being the backup. As we learn to care for our children's basic health needs ourselves, we deepen the bonds of family love and build confidence in ourselves and a sense of security and self-reliance in our children.
Common Children's Health Problems
It is common in children and affects many of all ages. There are many factors that may cause bedwetting, including allergies, diet, low blood sugar and neglect or abuse.
For allergies, dairy, chocolate and citrus are common culprits. Make sure not to overload a child's evening meal with carbohydrates and provide a protein-rich snack at bedtime can balance blood sugar levels may be helpful. If fear is a problem, due to neglect, abuse or just plain insecurity, then this will need to be appropriately addressed.
For symptomatic relief, drinking more water during the day while taking a soothing diuretic like Cornsilk or KB-C may help and avoid large quantities of water before bedtime. Magnesium or Ionic Minerals along with a low sugar diet, may prove helpful.
Bites and Stings
Our diet does influence how much we attract mosquitoes and other biting bugs. The sweeter our desserts, the more bug bites one can expect. Smelly stuff like Garlic can keep the bugs away, as can topical application of many essential oils.
When bugs do bite there are many remedies we can apply topically to reduce inflammation and itchiness. Essential oils like Lavender, Tea Tree or Tei Fu can all be helpful. Lobelia extract, CBG extract or a poultice of an astringent (White Oak Bark, Yarrow, Red Raspberry, etc.) can be used to reduce swelling and ease inflammation. Black Ointment will draw out the poison.
Eczema is known as dermatitis or neurodermatitis and can be hard to get rid of. Most often, stressed adrenals are the culprit. If your child experiences excessive cravings for sugar or cola drinks, often irritable, difficulty sleeping and suffers from fatigue, then adrenal fatigue may be an issue.
Dermatologists recognize eczema as an allergic reaction. Tired or weak adrenals a play part in this. Doctors will prescribe cortisone creams to reduce inflammation. Cortisone is a synthetic form of the adrenal-produced hormone cortisol. Licorice, Yucca and Wild yam all aid the adrenals in producing or sparing cortisol and have a similar anti-inflammatory action.
Another root cause of eczema can be found in the liver. Antihistamines produced naturally in the liver help to reduce allergic reactions. If the liver is stressed due to poor diet, this can be another contributing factor. Yellow dock, Burdock and Dandelion may help.
Look for foods your child may be allergic to. The Blood Type diet is a good place to start. Eliminate foods incompatible with your child's blood type. Wheat, corn, dairy, citrus and tomatoes are often major culprits. Problems with fat metabolism can be a factor. Lack of (or poor absorption of) essential fatty acids contributes to dry skin. Flax seed oil or Super GLA Oil supplementation may be needed, as well as Hi-Lipase enzymes to help the body break down the fats. Burdock can help the body process fats.
There are several other herbs that are very effective when used as ear drops. These are Lobelia extract, CBG extract, Silver shield, Garlic oil or Helichrysum and Lavender oil diluted in a carrier oil. Warming the oil or extract to body temperature prior to administering it is essential to avoid further irritation to the inflamed ear canal.
Use one part essential oils to ten parts olive oil when preparing essential oils for ear drops to avoid irritating the child's ear.
Frequent ear infections are often related to poor digestion and food allergies. Wheat and dairy products are the most common causes. Eyebright, EW and/or Histablock, taken internally can ease allergy symptoms. Keeping the child's bowel moving properly will help to prevent earaches.
In his book, How to Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor, Dr. Robert Mehndolson reveals "that the use of antibiotics for ear infections makes no difference in their outcomes." Antibiotics actually reduce the body's immune response and can increase the chances that the child will have another infection within the month. This information can be very reassuring to parents who are afraid if they don't get an antibiotic for that ear infection they run the risk of damaging their child's hearing. Use Echinacea/ Golden Seal or Golden Seal/Parthenium liquids or Lymph Gland Cleanse or Silver Shield for a natural antibiotic.
Sore throats can be soothed by reducing the swollen lymph glands in the throat with a gentle "milking" massage. A number of remedies can be applied topically to the throat to create a rapid effect like straight Garlic oil (pierce the capsules) or Capsicum and Lobelia extracts blended together. Twenty to thirty minutes of gentle massage to the throat with any of these remedies is often enough to take the pain out of a sore throat.
Internally, Garlic oil or High Potency Garlic may be used to fight infection. Lymph Gland Cleanse or IN-X will also help to reduce glandular swelling and ease the sore throat pain. A gargle with Silver Shield or any of the following herbs made into a tea can be very helpful for sore throats - Oregon grape and/or Goldenseal or Silver Shield.
A form of conjunctivitis, pinkeye involves an inflammation of the mucous membranes around the eye and eyelid. Symptoms include pain, swelling, redness, itching and discharge. Often the discharge will cause the eyes to stick together. It usually heals naturally in a couple of weeks, but the healing process can be expedited by using Silver Shield and/or an herbal eyewash. Prepare a tea with EW. (Brink a cup of water to a boil, remove, open 1-2 capsules, cover for 15 minutes, then apply.)This can be used as eye drops or applied as a compress by soaking a cotton ball or soft cloth in the tea and laying it over the eyes.
Taking extra Vitamin A internally and applying vitamin A oil topically around the eye (but not in it) can speed healing. The Chinese have long recognized that there is a correlation between the eyes and the liver. Supporting the liver with BP-X or Liver Cleanse Formula may speed recovery.
Fever is the body's natural response to infection. As long as the fever is not excessively high (105 or above) or prolonged, the fever should not be a cause for alarm. When children have a fever, their stomach and bowels are clogged. An enema using water or herbal teas of Yarrow, Catnip, Garlic or Peppermint will usually bring the fever down quickly and permanently as soon as the bowel moves.
Opening the sweat glands will help the body detoxify and bring down the fever. Herbs such as Blue Vervain, Yarrow, Garlic, Chamomile and/or Lobelia can help to open the sweat glands and help the body cool down. Warm baths using Epsom salts and essential oils are another helpful method. Have the child drink plenty of liquids while in the bath. Wrap the child in a blanket when she/he gets out of the tub and let them sweat the fever out.
Shingles is a related disorder that is believed to result from using drugs like aspirin to suppress the fever in chicken pox. Both chicken pox and shingles respond very well to the antiviral formula VS-C. Other blood purifying herbs have proven helpful for these illnesses, including Oregon grape, Goldenseal and Yellow dock. These herbs may be used both internally and externally to control itching and speed healing. A mixture of Enzyme Spray with Tea Tree oil in it can be sprayed on topically after the bath to prevent the sores from becoming infected and reduce the risk of scarring.
Sunburn isn't just painful, it is damaging to the skin if left unattended. When someone does get sunburned, you can protect the skin from further damage by keeping it hydrated. Aloe vera gel or Herbal Trim Skin Treatment or Silver shield gel can be slathered liberally over the affected areas and kept moist with water from a spray bottle.
Scientists have found that approximately 10 million American children are hosts to head lice per year. Worse yet, the Food and Drug Administration has linked the major ingredient in most shampoos, lindane, to seizures.
An effective alternative is to add Paw Paw (open capsules) mix into a natural shampoo to overcome the critters. Make a tea of Black Walnut and put on the hair for 15-20 and then wash and take Black Walnut internally. Giving the child Liquid Chlorophyll to balance pH levels and Flax Seed Oil to nourish the hair.
Mononucleosis or Mono, can be spread easily from drinking fountains, shared eating utensils, or just through the air. Often a depleted energy level, poor sleeping patterns and stress tend to exacerbate the effects of this disease.
Build the immune system with Trigger Immune and combating viral growth with VS-C. Licorice is antiviral and helps restore depleted energy. Protease Plus between meals to attack the protein structure of the virus will help to shorten the duration of illness. This disease can reoccur whenever the body becomes depleted, so paying attention to general good health practices such as diet, sleep and exercise is important.
Poison Ivy and Oak
Both of these plants have beautiful, bright-green foliage that inspired the British to take the plant back to Europe. They contain an irritating substance called urushiol in the sap that creates an irritation of the skin when contact is made. Urushiol is only found in the veins of the plants. When the leaves or stems are damaged the resin rushes to the surface.
Making a paste of Black Ointment, Golden seal, Capsicum and White Oak bark can help to topically relieve pain and itchiness. Purifying the blood with Burdock and Yellow dock can help. Avoid hot showers (which can spread the outbreak) and minimize sugar intake when recovering from poison ivy.
Tropical Treasures - Essential Oils to the Rescue
Here are some essential oils that can help with common health problems in children. The oils may be diffused into the child's room, diluted with a carrier oil and applied as a massage oil or used in baths.
Cold Sores: Geranium
Nightmares: Ylang Ylang (rubbed on feet)
Sore Throat: Jasmine
Stomach ache: Peppermint
Viral infections: Cinnamon
