Depression, fatigue, lack of energy, frustrating weight problems and inability to concentrate are just a few of the symptoms which can be caused by low blood sugar. Blood sugar (glucose) is the major nutrient needed by the brain and nervous system. When the level of blood sugar is low, one may experience a "misfiring" of the neurons in the brain, followed by the typical symptoms. According to Paavo Airola, Ph.D, symptoms that can be caused by low blood sugar include: extreme fatigue; severe cravings for sweets, alcohol, junk foods and other stimulants such as coffee and cigarettes, weakness and shortness of breath, ravenous hunger and stomach pain between meals;, cold feet, poor digestion, overweight problems, irritability and moodiness, confused thinking and inability to concentrate, emotional upset without cause and the schizophrenic feeling of "going crazy".
Measurements from 60-120 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood are typical. People who have true hypoglycemia can have a blood sugar level between 40 and 60 milligrams. Anyone can occasionally suffer from low blood sugar symptoms and a change in diet can correct blood sugar swings.
Dietary causes of blood sugar fluctuations include excessive use of refined sugar and starches (white sugar, white flour, potatoes, "junk foods"), use of stimulants (coffee, soda pop, aspirin, cigarettes and any drugs containing stimulants), lack of adequate protein for breakfast and lack of adequate amounts of soluble fiber in the diet.
Any of these dietary causes can be implicated in low blood sugar, especially in people with low-functioning adrenal glands, the glands of stress management that work hand-in-hand with the pancreas in regulating the blood sugar level.
Highlights Of Nutritional Management Of Hypoglycemia
Eliminate stimulants such as coffee, black tea, cola drinks, chocolate, aspirin and any other foods containing caffeine from the diet.
Support and rebuild the adrenal glands with Licorice Root ATC, Adrenal Support, and/or GTF Chromium. Use 1 tablespoon Chinese Mineral Chi Tonic in water twice daily. Sugar Reg helps control blood sugar levels.
Make sure that breakfast is eaten within 1 hour of awakening and contains at least 18-20 grams of protein. Do NOT skip this meal or it will be very difficult to recover normal levels of blood sugar during the remainder of the day. Nutri Burn (whey based) or Smart Meals (soy based) is the easiest way to insure proper protein intake.
Supplement each meal with PDA (Protein Digestive Aid) to insure that protein is completely digested and available to the body. (If you experience gas or bloating after eating, you are not taking enough PDA).
