A Real Life Saver
Tonight I read in our daily newspaper about your work in tracing cancer prone families. I was inspired to write you this letter which I hope you will take time to read. I know you must be a very busy person. There is much speculation as to why cancer is increasing and although I know there can be many causes, I would like to relate to you an experience which might be of some value in your work. In March 1974, I was working especially hard on my ranch. I became very weak and could hardly get enough strength to get up in the mornings. I seemed to need more rest but could not gain any strength no matter how much I rested. This went on for two months and at the end of that time I had what I thought (and the doctor partly agreed) was a heart attack. (pallor, dizziness, pain in the chest, etc.)
I am 61 years old and have worked hard all my life. My younger sister has been ill most of her lifetime and at the time of my attack she had just had two panel tests at the suggestion of two different physicians. The test did not reveal any particular or serious reasons for her illness. A friend then told her about an endocrinologist in San Francisco, who had found her husband's problem when many other test and physicians had failed. This man Dr. Becker, told her she had hypoglycemia and a thyroid deficiency so she came home and called to tell me that she felt quite sure I was also thyroid deficient, especially after we found out that the families on both parents side had a history of goiter and lazy thyroid. By this time, I was having night sweats and felt so weak and tired that I could scarcely do half a days work on my ranch. With this information, I went to my local doctor and told him about my sister's experience and my suspicions that it could also be my problem. He is a conscientious Christian doctor and listened carefully, then asked me if I knew the cause of thyroid deficiency. I did not, so he told me that it is caused by the lack of iodine in the system (which in turn is caused by the thyroid gland not working efficiently). The doctor made the five hour glucose tolerance test, but told me he would not know the results for a week. When I arrived home, I called my cousin, who is a pharmacist and asked him how I could get some iodine to eat. He said the best natural source of iodine is kelp tablets so we bought a bottle of them and I immediately took two tablets per meal. The second day after starting this, I had no more sweats, and awoke refreshed and able to start doing a full days work. I have been doing so ever since. I have not felt this good for many years and I need only 7 or 8 hours sleep compared to the 10 or 11 hours I had needed all my life to feel rested. I have always been subject to sore throat and every winter had a battle with pneumonia. X-rays show a permanent black spot on my lung as a result of this. I consumed many boxes of strong cough drops each winter to avoid coughing so much. In the two years since I've been taking kelp, I have not had one sore throat nor any pneumonia, even when I work in the cold and rain on my ranch. And my cough has entirely disappeared.
I had suffered occasional leg cramps which have entirely disappeared. Now to back track a little, when I went back to my doctor to hear his report, one week after his test, he could not find any thyroid deficiency and only reported border-line diabetes. I then told him that since he had been honest enough to tell me the cause for thyroid deficiency, I would be honest enough to tell him that I had been talking kelp tablets and was feeling so good that as long as I felt good as I then did, I did not need a doctor. He recorded all this on my record sheet and also how many tablets per day I take. He told me that the entire San Joaquin Valley is deficient in iodine. I have not needed to go back to his office for any reason in two years since this took place.
Now my point in telling you this experience is two fold. First, when the thyroid does not work properly (or not at all) all the glands in the body suffer accordingly, and secondly, I am convinced that there must be something very healing and vital about iodine in the human body that most (or many) people are not getting. I feel that many years of irrigation, plus rainfall is washing the iodine from the land into the ocean.
A year ago, I suspected that the Japanese people do not have cancer as Americans do, so I asked a local M.D. who specializes in Intestinal Cancer problems. He told me that they do not have the type of cancer that the American people have, generally speaking, but they have intestinal cancer (his theory is) that it's caused by the habit of eating raw fish. The reason I suspected that they do not have cancer as we have is because they eat large quantities of sea food which contains iodine. Their menu is largely made up of sea food which is eaten several times a day or at the least daily. If American people were to consume as much iodine as the Japanese people have built up in their system, we would have to eat 30 tablets of .15 milligrams of iodine daily, because this is the maximum amount the FDA permits per tablet. I now take 5 to 6 tablets per meal depending upon how I feel.
It is my fervent wish that a study group of doctors or specialist (such as yourself, Dr. Li) could be formed to search more deeply into this aspect of cancer. My next experiment will be to buy kelp fertilizer for my home garden and note the results. I read very recently that someone took the mineral deposits left from a receding ocean and mixed them with soil. They then planted tomatoes which grew much larger than average. When these tomatoes were left lying around they dehydrated instead of the usual rotting process. I told the complete story of my illness and kelp cure, of the Japanese people's lack of cancer, and of the dehydrating tomatoes to a friend who had served overseas in the Japanese occupied islands during World War II. He said to me, very excitedly, Now! You have just solved a mystery that has been on my mind for many years!" He then proceeded to tell me that when the Japanese were killed and lay on the ground for some length of time, they seemed to shrivel and dry up, rather than rot as the Americans did. This indicates to me that there may be more body cell preservation in heavy iodine users than has been heretofore realized. I also related my experience to a friend who was visiting us from Ohio and his reply was that it is a well known fact that everyone born and raised in Ohio is definitely iodine deficient. I was born in Ohio in 1915 and moved to California with my parents in 1920, having lived here ever since. I believe that severe cases of thyroid deficiency (or lazy thyroid) is definitely inherited because, as I mentioned earlier in this letter, all five of my aunts on my fathers side and who were raised in Ohio, had goiters removed fairly early in life. I have been told of a state in the Middle East that produces many hogs for market. These hogs lack hair (or bristles) on their bodies unless large amounts of iodine are added to their rations.
In event you, or anyone in your knowledge, should research this medical aspect, I would greatly appreciate knowing of your findings and conclusions, whether it be done soon or in the future. Written with sincerity and the hope of strengthening and perhaps saving many lives. ---John M. Frantz
KELP---IS THE BEST AND SAFEST SOURCE OF IODINE which kills germs, increase energy, encourages healthful sleep, relieves fatigue, tension, and strain, and helps to make one quiet, calm, and relaxed. It helps one to think clearly, make quick decisions, and remember better.
Energy, health, and endurance come from the thyroid; iodine in kelp makes a healthy thyroid upon which our very lives depend. An iodine deficiency may cause goiter, anemia, low blood pressure, overweight, and cancer.
In addition to iodine, kelp contains calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, potassium, magnesium, manganese, chlorine, sulphur, barium, boron, zinc, silicon, chromium, nickel, silver, titanium, and other minerals. For maximum health kelp should be taken daily.
Practically all sickness is caused by nutritional deficiencies. We must now turn to the ocean to satisfy these deficiencies. The fertility and mineral wealth of the earth are running to the ocean. Sea water and perfectly healthy human blood have identically the same chemical analysis. Sea water has exactly what the human body needs.
