Pau d'arco is tree native to Central and South America and the West Indies. It can reach a height of 125 feet and can withstand severe winds. Its flowers can range in shade from rose to violet, which bloom in profusion just before the leaves appear. Amazingly, no fungus of any kind grows· on these trees, even though they grow in tropical rain forests. They are utterly immune to fungal infections, unlike any other tree. Pau d’Arco has been called the 'miracle tree' and has gained much popularity for its anti-fungal properties. As a result of this unique property, it is able to kill human funguses like athlete's foot and candida.
Historically, this tree has been used to help every ailment from age spots to yeast infections. Pau d’Arco has been used by Native Indians in many South American countries for thousands of years to remedy ailments such as ulcers, malaria, diabetes, arthritis and tumors.
Today pau d'arco is used to treat a wide variety of ailments including fevers, infections, colds, flu, syphilis, respiratory problems, skin ulcerations, arthritis, and circulation troubles. It is also used to relieve pain, kill germs and has even been recommended as an antidote for poisons. The bark has also shown promise for the widespread treatment of cancers and has been used in this capacity in much of South America already.
In Canada and the United States the bark is used in treatment of yeast syndromes, ailments attributed to an overgrowth of or hypersensitivity to a yeast like fungus called Candida albicans. Symptoms of this infection include: fatigue, food allergies, skin rashes, headaches, indigestion, alcohol intolerance, joint and muscle pains, constipation, stuffy nose, and short term memory loss. Those who have successfully used pau d’Arco to treat yeast syndrome report that it is highly effective. However, there are some who have claimed there is no benefit. For those who have found the herb helpful, small amounts of tea were first consumed and, over a period of weeks or months, more tea was slowly added. The treatment is most effective when combined with a diet containing no simple sugars.
In the 1960's, a physician in Brazil used this evergreen to treat cancer patients at a local hospital. Typically, the patients' pain disappeared rapidly and sometimes complete remission occurred in just four weeks. For this reason, Pau d’Arco has become a standard form of treatment for some types of cancer and for a variety of infections throughout Brazil. In addition, use of this powerful antibiotic provides treatment without many of the common side effects of the more orthodox medications. Effects such' as pain, hair loss and immune dysfunction are symptoms that are commonly eliminated by the use of Pau d’Arco. This clinical evidence has not yet been sufficient to cause widespread acceptance of the herb, though interest has been stimulated around the world.
Pau d’Arco was prescribed in one Brazilian hospital for more than one thousand diabetic patients. A hospital pharmacist reported that the majority of the diabetics were in remission following their use of the tree.
Pau d’Arco can also inhibit, kill or stunt the growth of several dangerous viruses ranging from the common cold to the herpes virus. For herpes, Pau d’Arco has been used immediately following the first symptoms to prevent full outbreaks, and has been used during the outbreak to control it and speed healing.
Among the other ailments pau d’Arco has been recommended for are: age spots, anemia, arthritis, body odor, boils, eczema, hernias, Hodgkin's Disease, leukemia, Lou Gehrig's Disease, Lupus, Parkinson's Disease, psoriasis, spinal meningitis, spleen infection, syphilis, and wounds. It can also help those suffering from the side effects of antibiotics and chemotherapy. It has gained attention as a possible treatment for AIDS.
When using pau d'arco as an anti-cancer remedy and as an anti-fungal remedy, take two to five capsules three times a day. However, decocted teas work the best. For a decocted tea simmer one tablespoon in two pints water for 20 minutes, drink two to three cups per day. The reported South American medical doctor method is one heaping teaspoon of the bark to each cup of boiled water taken three times per day. It can be applied topically for fungal infections or other skin problems.
When taking pau d' arco extract, take one to two complete eye droppers full in a cup of water three to four times per day as a treatment or 20 drops per day as a preventative.
There are no side effects from this herb. But, do not use it as a sole remedy in cases of chronic constipation because it has a strong astringing action. Though it does have immune enhancing powers, at present it appears to not aggravate auto-immune disorders involving over active immune systems.
